Apple Announces Reserve and Pick-Up Services

Apple has announced a new service that allows a customer to purchase hardware online, and then simply pick it up later from the store.

With the recent store designs that have removed the register counters, and the move to the iPhone Touch-based payment system, this new move tells me one thing: Apple doesn’t think the hand-held payment service is going to be able to handle the same customer load as the old register system. So they are off-loading some of the checkout transactions to the website.

It’s smart. I love the concept. But I think there are added benefits to each store that drove Apple to do it.
